Animation by Roger Noake

Karen Watson is a B.A.F.T.A. nominated British animation director, writer and filmmaker.

Specialising in creative communications and video production, Karen produces a range of commissioned media work including: business videos and charity promosanimation and live-action short films, documentaries, music promos, videographies and memoirs. She also accepts commissions for scriptwriting, editing and copywriting, and requests for visiting lectures or teaching workshops.

Prior to working freelance as Karen Watson Film & Animation, Karen worked for Carlton Television/ITV as a Series Producer and Director on a range of factual programmes covering food, gardening and the arts, and as a Script Editor on the first re-commission of the daily soap ‘Crossroads’ in 2001. Early in her TV career, she also worked on the Saturday morning children's network show 'Scratchy & Co' and in more recent years as a Freelance Writer, Word Doctor and Copywriter for several companies including a ladieswear company.

Described as innovative, original and inspiring, Karen’s first film, the animated short, ‘Daddy’s Little Bit of Dresden China, won a series of awards including: The Mari Kuttna Award for ‘Best British Animated Film’ at the London Film Festival, a Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival and The Observer Awards for Best Animation Script and Best Original Soundtrack at the British Animation Awards. It was also nominated for a BAFTA and screened on BBC2 and Channel 4 (See All Awards)

Her other films have included; ‘The Sharpest Witch’, a prize-winning fairytale based on Hansel & Gretel, made for screening on ITV, sponsored by Kellogg’s and produced by Rag Doll Productions (makers of ‘Telly Tubbies' and 'In the Night Garden'), and ‘Sweet Heart’, a dark, psychological tale focusing on female body image, mixing stop-motion 3D animation and live-action. Along with ‘Dresden China’, Sweet Heart’ is Karen’s favourite of all her films and yet the least seen until now.

Karen is a graduate of the prestigious National Film & Television School and also holds a 1st Class BA (Hons) Degree from the University of Creative Arts (formerly WSCAD), and a Triple Merit Diploma in Horticulture from Brackenhurst Horticultural College, reflecting her love of the environment.
